About The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Swedish author Stieg Larsson was a relatively unknown journalist until he broke through into mainstream literature as the writer of tremendous crime thrillers. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was the first volume in the Millennium trilogy that brought Larsson into the light and exposed him as the mastermind genius he was. In his homeland of Sweden and neighbor Denmark, the crime trilogy has sold millions upon millions of copies. Unfortunately, Larsson would never come to realize the completeness of his success as he died young of a heart attack in 2004 before his novels were put into print.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo features journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who career and life in general have take several bad turns. A Swedish tycoon destroys Blomkvist in a criminal libel case, sending him to prison for a short time and ruining his career, reputation and name. That's when he receives a strange request regarding a 40 year-old unsolved crime. Harriet Vanger vanished from the island owned by her family and her uncle, the powerful lawyer Henrik Vanger, seeks Blomkvist out to investigate what became of her. Despite the lack of a body or evidence, Vanger is convinced Harriet has been murdered by someone in her own family and he is determined to find the truth.

While some have viewed this novel as being entirely too dark and negative in its view of human nature, the mystery of what happened on this secluded island so many years previous is gripping. One could easily read this lengthy novel in a matter of days and feel that only hours have passed. The suspense builds and builds like a roller coaster rising before the plummet.

Many of the characters of this novel are distasteful much of the time, which actually lends to its realistic approach to mystery-solving. Male characters in the book clearly have a real hatred towards the feminine sex, making degrading and sexist remarks. Their faults add to the richness of the writing and build strong feelings of disdain for certain characters.

With a thick combination of passion, suspense and mystery, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is as exciting as a crime novel gets. It is well-written and full of the twists and turns that leave readers turning pages late into the night. What initially seems like an unsolvable and dead-end case suddenly comes to life and begins to give pieces of itself away as enticing treats. The character who owns the title of the book, Lisbeth Salander, adds much complexity to the mystery. Her character is very well-developed, and her past brings much layering into who she is and what she is doing helping Blomkvist with this investigation.

This crime novel is a fantastic read and a suspenseful page turner from start to finish.
