About The Secret
There is a very simple "secret" to getting anything you want, anything in the world. Whether you wish to make more money, lose weight, find your true love, or succeed at your job, learn the "secret" and it will happen. Believe, and your dreams will come true.
Who can resist an offer like that? Its premise, more than anything else, is probably what made Rhonda Byrne's The Secret a worldwide bestseller. The contents have been hotly debated as to legitimacy, but the one thing that is clear is that it is worth a try. Yes, plenty of people have read the book and dismissed it as a load of bull; plenty of others have also read the book and come away inspired, refreshed. Presumably some have gone on to succeed, but whether or not that is due to The Secret only they can say.
What I find most interesting about this secret is that its very nature makes it so difficult to judge. By definition, doubt is the greatest enemy and so it is very easy to brush off all the skeptics by saying that it will not work if they do not think it will work. On the flip side, there is no surefire way of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that the secret is really working for the people who think it is working for them. For all we know, it could simply be the placebo effect. In the end, each person can only take away from this book how much he or she chooses to take away... but the book itself is certainly worth looking at, if only to decide in the end that it is worthless.
The actual text of The Secret is simple, clear-cut, and easy to understand. There is no excess of flowery language, and the chapters are organised in a logical manner, drawing the reader in step by step. I found there to be a bit too much quoting for my tastes - it felt as though the author was trying too hard to prove her point - but otherwise the pace felt fine.
The book's overall design (the cover in particular) reminded me of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. The squarish size, the fake "seal" press on the front, and the script-like font all gave the book a rustic touch, and I will here admit that it is what drew me to pull the book from the shelf in the first place. That said, the appearance is more or less hype. As the saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover."
