About Valkyrie
Despite the challenges in the production process, all of the behind the scenes problems that kept Valkyrie from being released are soon put to the wayside as soon as Tom Cruise comes onto the screen and begins his plot to kill the famous Nazi tyrant, Adolf Hitler. As Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, Cruise portrays a famed German known in his country for resisting the Nazi shadow. However, in this country, his story is overwhelmingly unknown. Stauffenberg was trained as a well-bread and loyal soldier, however, he grew disgusted with the dictator's leadership. After suffering wounds in a battle in Tunisia that cost him his hand and an eye, Cruise's character begins to plan an assassination attempt. Enlisting help from a group of army officers and political leaders, the network works out a political strategy that is both suspenseful and daring.
According to historians, the plan to plant a bomb and kill Hitler was completed, but failed to kill the Fuhrer in 1944. Loyalists quelled the coup and the conspirators and many others suffered heavily. Although we know that Hitler ultimately dies by his own hand, the images of these men building up the plot is not one to be messed.
Valkyrie was directed by Bryan Singer, who combines the film's scenes as a wonderful conspiracy thriller and historical commentary. The vein of the imagery and pacing are reminiscent of Mission: Impossible and the Usual Suspects, not unbelievable since one half of the scriptwriter team, Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, was responsible for that second classic. The film takes a look less at why the men commit to the conspiracy and more about how the story went. The tight shots exploring the secret groups in small rooms smoking a number of cigarettes are riveting.
The darkness and smoke is balanced with imagery of low lit rooms and shady outdoors, glistening with the metal of steel and guns. Along with Tom Cruise, Valkyrie assembled an amazing international cast. Singer calls on Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard to round out the amazing acting skills of the supporting characters. The amazing thing about this film as well is that the cast keeps its own voice in their accents. Each line is performed in the native tongue of the actors themselves. The film is made even better with the leadership of Tom Cruise, poised for action and surrounded by an amazing array of men all with the same goal in mind. The ultimate American movie star stands on the precipice of history and looks down the barrel of change and speaks, “We have to kill Hitler.” Valkyrie continues down a spiral of historical ramifications and the viewer understands exactly what might have been and what could have happened.
