About Fuel

Maybe you remember the old Mel Gibson movies, Mad Max, in which Mel scurries around in a post-apocalyptic desert ruled by crazy warlords and a ferocious Tina Turner. If you've ever seen a Mad Max movie, then you'll already have a feel for what playing Fuel, the 2009 game set to be released soon by Asobo Studio, will be like.

Fuel's world is one that arises in our near future, when global warming has changed our known landscape to a point of being almost unrecognizable. Drivers have to contend not just other drivers and sharp turns on (abandoned) city streets – the usual fare for a racing game – but with driving obstacles that include tornadoes, bush fires, sand storms, blizzards, and the other hallmarks that just might come with our looming environmental disaster. All these disasters have made the land uninhabitable – which happily leaves huge swaths of land just for racers.

Fuel, which has been under development since 2005, has a few very unique features. The first is its world. This world, which is rendered in eye-popping detail, takes familiar icons of the American landscape, such as the SkyWalk of the Grand Canyon, and turns them on their head. Adding a gritty, environmental disaster look, it transforms every familiar part of the American west into a setting for Mad Max-style cutthroat racing.

An ambitious 5,000 square miles, any part of the Fuel world can be driven at any time. This is unusual for driving games, where players typically have to stay on the beaten path. Go too far to the left or right and the screen just stops, as the car or bike you're driving butts up against some invisible wall. Not so with Fuel. The crisscrossing interstates and state highways of the American west are still there – if you want to stay on them. But in Fuel, you can literally drive anywhere... really.

But as if the landscape itself wasn't exciting enough, there's the practically unlimited number and type of vehicles for players to drive. In Fuel, there are seventy different vehicles to choose from. These are divided into the categories of bikes, ATVs, muscle cars, raggedy SUVs (it's ironic to include this class, considering that it just might cause the environmental disaster that Fuel is based on), buggies, and trucks (including a school bus that has been transformed into a monster truck).

As for gameplay, Fuel offers a variety of options. There are checkpoint races, circuit races, and “raid races” which include only a start point, a finish line, and a race against the clock and your opponents. Fuel will also have an option to go head-to-head with other players online.

Fuel is set to be released this month. For any fans of Xbox racing games, this one is going to be a precedent-setting must-have.
