About Pure

Many racing games stick to the same basic formula as it's predecessors, focusing on the race, tight cornering and just getting to that finishing line. Though this can be fun and challenging it does tend to get old a little fast as you see this set up over multiple games. Pure however is a breath of fresh air, offering an exciting and different approach than "hold down accelerator, brake for corners".

Where Pure really shines is with its trick system. These tricks are absolutely incredible, defying physics and looking awesome while doing so. The incredibly detailed graphics add another level to the "woah" factor. But best of all the tricks aren't just meaningless fluff. Whenever you perform a trick, it fills your boost bar, which you can then use to temporarily increase your racer's speed. But it's a little more complicated than that, as your boost bar is divided into three "tiers". If you're boost bar is low, you can only perform simple tricks that don't add much to your bar. If it's high, you can fill it almost instantly, even unlocking special tricks that instantly refills it all the way. This results in a level of resource management as to how much boost you use and how much you conserve, which adds a nice level of depth. The game also discourages you from grinding the same old trick over and over, ensuring that it stays fresh.

Speaking of depth, this is one area Pure is a little lacking in. The single player mode takes no time at all to complete even compared to other racing games. There are only 12 courses, which can get repetitive, and the garage mode that lets you build your own vehicle gets frustrating as you have to wade through more and more parts looking for the one you just unlocked. Though its kind of fun to build vehicles specifically for certain events, it falls far short of usual standards and becomes plain boring. Fortunately online multiplayer is fantastic, and there are several single player modes aside from World Tour. Sprint and Race are a little generic and self-explanatory, but Freestyle offers something unique. In Freestyle you rack up points doing tricks, and whoever gets the most points wins. This emphasizes the game's strongest feature, and even has power-ups littered around the course for an extra arcade like feel.

So in short, this game provides a thrilling, simplistic but fun style that will have you sitting on the edge of your chair. The action paced game is disappointingly short, but any game that you're wishing was longer is probably a winner.
