About The Sims 3

The Sims 3 Brings New Excitement to the Simulation Front

As a long-standing Sims fan, the release of The Sims 3 has been something to look forward to for quite a while. Each postponement is a tease of the greatness to come. Now set for a June release, Maxis has raised the bar again on simulation games.

The Sims 3 boasts numerous differences from it's predecessors: seamless neighbourhoods (no more load screens to deal with in order to explore), more facial/body detail possibilities and a more customisable hairstyle are just a few of the changes.

Further changes include "Wishes" instead of "Wants" and more emotional depth. Moods are no longer solely happy or sad, your Sim can become dreamy from their first kiss, or gloomy due to being fired from their job. These moods will also affect their interaction with other Sims in regards to conversation subjects (the topic of conversation can also be changed). Self expression is much more prevalent in this edition. Protests can be held, furniture and and clothes can be customized in game and paintings will be unique to each Sim based on their personality and mood.

Skills have become more fine-tuned and much more relevant to regular game play. Fishing has become a skill (rather than a talent). Top fishing marks will unlock bigger fish that you can now put in the aquarium in your Sims home -- they can even be given a name! High logic skill marks allows Sims to tutor other Sims and cooking marks will unlock recipes.

All of these new features combine together to make your Sim much more personable. Traits will develop from childhood and continue into your adult life (as a child, you'll have two distinct traits; this will increase up to five with adulthood). Personality traits will affect your in-game interaction and interests.

But what about the pesky design limitations of Sims games past? This is an issue no longer. Frustration formerly associated with the gruelling, often impossible task of lining the sofa and TV up evenly has now been replaced with layout freedom. Items can be rotated 360 degrees and placed at angles. Staircases can be made up to ten tiles wide and doors, like furniture, can be placed in the midst of two tiles for greater design ease.

For all of the changes, some things still remain the same: Sims will still speak in Simlish, can still have accidents if unable to get to a restroom in time and they can still die of hunger.

In short, The Sims 3 is a dream come true, with expanded possibilities for fun. If you're a Sim fan, this is the epitome of simulation gaming thus far.
