About Angels and Demons (Soundtrack)
Score music, when done right, is an expression of emotion - joy, sorrow, pain, love, hate - and when it is put in the hands of someone as gifted as Hans Zimmer, emotion is drawn out at all costs, even if it against the will. Zimmer's work has always stirred the heart, the gut, and the mind - his work on the scores for Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, The Da Vinci Code, and The Last Samurai attest well enough to that.
Creating something out of nothing, emotion where there might only be a quiet scene, or a man running down a street, is nothing short of miraculous. It is then appropriate that we are dealing with a film score where the miraculous is all part of the show.
The score for Angels and Demons is self aware in a wonderful way, playing with dark themes the way a child plays pretend - innocently, quietly, and without artifice. Like it's predecessor, The Da Vinci Code, this score tackles heavy topics such as faith, religion, conspiracy, and murder, without losing its way in a muddle of scary violins meant only to heighten the drama. The musical cues have to strike just the right chord to avoid slipping into melodrama, and the balance struck is nothing short of breathtaking to behold.
As the title suggests, this is a film score that deals in both light and dark, shadows chasing each other down dimly lit street corners as faith and reason do battle. The track Science and Religion catapults the listener into the front pew of a cathedral, while God Particle urges you to run for your life. And the lovely 503 (featuring Joshua Bell on the violin) belongs not on film, but in a concert hall.
The narrative flow of the album is what gives Angels and Demons its beauty - as the title suggests, it lives in a gray area where even a fallen angel was once an angel.
Many of the same notes found in The Da Vinci Code soundtrack make an appearance here, but where Da Vinci was full of wonder and discovery, Angels and Demons is all sharp edges and dangerous corners where wonder and discovery hide in the shadows, afraid to come into the light.
