About Bare Bones

Bare Bones is Madeleine Peyroux's fifth studio album, and the first she written, or co-written, in its entirety. For those who find this concerning, let me assure you, her voice carries these songs as brilliantly as it's always carried the songs of others.

I'll spare you the usual descriptions of her voice, although truly, her signature alto is as smoky-sweet and as supple you've come to expect. She sounds both fresh and familiar here, which can only be explained by the depth and quality of her voice, the way she makes these new songs feel as comfortable as ever and still absolutely new.

Already this record has its critics, those who say it doesn't take a enough risks, and those who are only interested in the voice of the singer and not the words of songwriter. And though I agree this artist has made a career of being a wonderful re-interpreter, and that she's given a new life to the old songs and brought a new appreciation to the old recordings, too, on Bare Bones she's interpreting her own songs for the listener, and she's doing a beautiful job of it.

While she gets writing assists from long-time collaborator Larry Klein, as well as the likes of Walter Becker, Julian Coryell, Joe Henry, David Batteau and Sean Wayland, these songs have a surprising lightness that can only be attributed to Madeleine Peyroux herself. That said, this record cannot be dismissed as some sort of light-hearted romp. It's almost Cohen-esque in its intensity, especially in the evocative "River of Tears" and the richly-imaged "Our Lady of Pigalle". There are deep grooves here, as well, such as "You Can't Do Me", and the lyrics throughout are threaded through with loss, most evident in "I Must Be Saved," a song Peyroux authored without collaboration.

It's within this contradiction that you'll find the magic of Bare Bones. This is a record for listeners who understand that love and loss are not opposites, but cohabitants, as necessary to each other as the beginning and the end. These are songs for those willing to slow down enough to really hear them, and to those who say there just isn't enough risk here, I say: listen closer.

If this record is a journey then Peyroux's voice is the best sort of company, the sort you wouldn't dream of dropping off along the way.
