About Ill Communication
Ill Communication by the Beastie Boys is one of the band's most explosive albums. The record is a prime example of the group's familiar formula of mixing home style jams with live instrumentation. It balances speed and hardcore in the vocals, providing an incredible explosion of exposition. Their rhymes work to unite the hissing vintage recording equipment to the post-modern style about the tracks. Throughout the record, an attack against digital technology pervades the lyrics. In their exploration of hip-hop and punk rock, the band finds ways to take the basic elements of each and twist it around. Its like someone took Neapolitan ice cream and mixed it in a blender.
From the start of the first track, the groove of the music scratches at the listener's head. The snare and bass thumps consistently as the grind of the power chords reverberate across one's chest. Both genres explored on this record get equal time and attention as the Beasties tackle what quite possibly be the first great work of their career. The overall appeal of Ill Communication makes it not just a crunching attack on our sensibilities, but becomes a mature artistic analysis that fits in nicely with the grunge and gasta rap that influenced 1994 record releases.
As the fourth album in the Beastie Boys discography, the group explores more effects along with its predictable focus. Layer after layer of distortion on the vocals is matched with an amazing echo effect that turns mere lyrics into a voice instrument. It adds rhythm and melody that wraps itself around the rest of the music. A number of these innovations are recognizably rooted in the dancehall pulses of reggae. The dub mixing is noticeable, bringing in sonic inspiration from innovative musicians like Lee "Scratch" Perry.
A number of other influences come from a catalog of the Beastie's own past. 1970s funk mixes with bass-driven metal. Thrash musicians like Black Flag, the Germs and Minor Threat also rear their influential head on the record. There are also other concepts worked over such as the use of an organ, wah-wah pedals, and guitar scratching. One of the more exciting elements is on the track "Get It Together." It features not only an amazing piano loop played in the minimalist manner, but also a freestyle by Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. Ill Communication brings an amazing sophistication to the Beasties discography that is slightly more impressive than their old anarchist work.
